Introduction
Dentistry holds a deep personal significance for me. Having personally experienced the transformative impact of skilled dental care as a teenager suffering from Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ), I am drawn to a profession that restores smiles and alleviates both physical and psychological pain. Inspired by my mother, a dedicated dentist, and my own hands-on experiences, I am confident in my ability to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients.

The intervention of skilled dentists has made a dramatic difference in my life, which is why I feel drawn to the profession. I want to acquire the skills and knowledge to make a similar difference in people’s lives. I suffered from Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ), which made me a very self-conscious 13-year-old who was socially insecure. Skilled and sympathetic dentists resolved the physical problem and restored my self-image. Thus, I hope to restore smiles and alleviate pain too, both physical and psychological.
I recognize that dentistry has many facets requiring highly developed technical skills and knowledge, manual and diagnostic skills, a keen interest in innovation, techniques and materials, and the ability to plan. Success in dentistry requires empathy, confidence, and the ability to relate well to patients of all cultural and social backgrounds. My mother is a dentist, providing me with a basic knowledge of dentistry from an early age, and her dedication has been inspirational in many aspects of my life. I have been a volunteer in the field and spent a summer working as a Dental Assistant, to assure myself that I have the potential to succeed in the profession. I now submit this application with great confidence that this is the case.
My ultimate ambition is to become a highly skilled and knowledgeable dentist passionate about helping patients suffering or recovering from oral cancers. I also seek extensive engagement with the underserved and hope to specialize in their care.
I have ‘shadowed’ several dentists, including specialists, and have been present at complex dental operations. Among the several dedicated and highly skilled dentists I have shadowed, one was particularly inspirational. His skills, knowledge, concern for his colleagues and staff, and human interest in his patients, were outstanding. He is the person that I shall seek to emulate in my professional life.
As an undergraduate student, I shadowed dentists with various specialties and my extensive studies in psychology have helped me to understand and calm the nerves of anxious parents. I have professional experience in medical administration that has helped to prepare a solid foundation for excellence in patient care.
My special passion for the battle against oral cancer arises from my studies of the psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis and the emotional strength and resilience required for professionals in response. I have assiduously cultivated the art of compassion to help patients survive these times of crisis in their lives.
‘Making a difference’ rather than merely making a living for myself has been my top priority in life since I was a child. Consequently, I have donated considerable amounts of time to volunteer activity, working in a food bank and, more recently, serving as a volunteer member of the Red Cross ‘Language Bank’. I moved to the US from Ukraine at the age of thirteen and am sensitive to the difficulties faced by those who face great challenges communicating in English and adjusting to a new culture, as I did.
I consider myself to be a ‘well-rounded’ person whose hobbies include ceramics, which enhanced my natural manual abilities in preparation for excellence in dentistry. I compete in Latin and ballroom dance competitions and continue to travel in Europe. I am fluent in English, Ukrainian, and Russian and intermediate in German. I adore teamwork and relish the mastery of multitasking. I am confident that I possess the academic potential and exceptional personal characteristics required of a highly effective dentist. I intend to excel, rather than succeed in the program and promise enthusiastic and diligent participation on every level.
Thank you for considering my application.
